Project Description

Join us for our Annual Spring Art Show!

People Like You are welcomed to see “People Like Me”. NISA marks Mental Health Week – May 4 to May 8 –  with it’s annual spring art show. This years’s theme focuses on the transformative stories of recovery from people with lived experience of mental illness. The gallery will showcase people who have had mental health challenges and have found art a powerful tool in their recovery. A breadth of talent will be displayed, with creations in acrylic, oil, watercolour, photography, pencil, digital creations, materials found in nature, and more. It’s an excellent opportunity for the community to view our extensive permanent gallery and to take a tour of our new downtown location.

Kaarina RantaIMG_3820[1]The portrait, “Kaarina”, is of NISA’s own Program Coordinator, Kaarina Ranta. Its creator is one of this years showcase artists, Terry Pretz. Pretz is an accomplished artist who delves into various mediums to express himself. He is often drawn to portraits which can express, through another, how he is feeling and viewing the world. He draws his inspiration from the everyday. Pretz says, “beauty is art, art is beauty, and I thank God there is a lot of beauty in this world.”

Another of the featured artists is Irvin Marshall Elwood*, an accomplished muralist who has worked independently for the last 25 years creating both commerical and residential works. He often draws his inspiration from Native spiritual teachings that imply that all beings have a spirit, including mountains and trees. This essence of interconnectivity is a central part of what we are intending to share duing this Art Show.

The other artists featured in the show are:

Terry Fullager, Georgia Lalande, Ray Laporte, Meredith McMaster, Debbie Ouimette, Kaarina Ranta, Suzanne Rivard, Cynthia Stech, Jeannie Vaillancourt, and Heather Wise

There will also be readings from some of NISA’s published authors: Arvind Jagessar, SueAnn Land on behalf of Guy Durepos, Maria Raso and Odette St-Gelais.

The show will run during national Mental Health Week from Monday, May 4 through to Friday, May 8, 2015, 9am to 4pm. The official opening will be on Wednesday May 6 at 7pm at NISA, located downtown Sudbruy at 36 Elgin St., 2nd floor. The space is wheelchair accessible and refreshments will be provided.
