Being

Belonging

Becoming

NISA encourages a rediscovery of self. We have a right to exist, a right to be who we are, and a right to receive the support we need to live well.
NISA is a place to go, a place to gather, a place to belong. No matter what.
NISA supports skill development, helping people build on their strengths and discover new opportunities. We value active living and meaningful participation in the community.

Who are we?

Northern Initiative for Social Action (NISA) is a peer-led organization that offers a range of supports, including WRAP (Wellness Recovery Action Plan), support groups, skills groups, recreation groups, and resources for individuals on their mental health and substance use health journeys.

Our staff and volunteers are people with lived experience – we are peers.

At NISA, we see lived experience as a source of strength. We provide a space to move beyond stigma, be recognized as a whole person, and build on your strenths.

OUR

MISSION

Being, belonging, becoming for all people with lived experience of mental health and substance use challenges.

Our Impact

NISA began in 1997, when a group of individuals with lived experience came together through a research project led by a local occupational therapist. They explored what was getting in the way of recovery and what would help. What emerged was a shared vision: a safe, welcoming space to build skills, engage in meaningful activities, and take next steps forward.

In 1998, NISA was established as a non-profit organization – run by and for people with lived experience.

Over time, NISA has grown to include peer support, groups, and outreach – always grounded in lived experience and community.

Today, that vision continues. NISA remains a place to be who you are, to find connection and belonging, and to build a life that feels meaningful.
